The Importance of SEO

What is Search Engine Optimization?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is one of the most misunderstood concepts on the internet.

It is simply a way of tweaking your site, using keywords that you choose, to make your site easier for Google and other search engines to find. That's it.

It sounds fancy, but in reality it is not. SEO is just a way of using words to your advantage so your website gets noticed in search results.

Why you need to Master SEO?

Why does this work so well?
Because Google is a computer at the end of the day, that's why.

For all the hoopla and hype about Google, it is really just a set of algorithms running on a computer.

Knowing how to get noticed by those algorithms is all that is needed to start getting traffic to your site.

That is why search engine optimization is so important and you need to use it!

It can be one of those things that you obsess over, and spend thousands of dollars on, but that is completely unnecessary.

You can do a lot of it yourself, and it is easy to do.

That is the biggest secret regarding SEO.

Many companies and consultants will tell you that they can guarantee certain results for X amount of dollars, and that's true.

However, with a basic understanding of search engine optimization, you can fine-tune your site so it gets picked up and ranked on page 1 of Google with relative ease.

There are two things that are necessary to accomplish this… consistency and keywords.

Now, I realize that keywords as it relates to SEO could be an entire ebook, and it probably will be at some point.

However, for now you can make use of the Google keyword planner tool found in Google Adwords for guidance. If you don't have an Adwords account, it is easy to set one up.

Once you login, you can start putting in keywords for Google to generate keyword ideas.

You can view a ton of information from the keywords generated and take a look at how competitive they are.

Once you narrow down your keywords to the ones you want to use for your site, it's time to look toward SEO.

By using groups of keywords repetitively, and in specific areas of your website, you will increase the chances for your site to rank.

Again, I am assuming that you have an understanding of what keywords are or are willing to put in the time to make that happen. There is a ton of information on the Internet on the subject of keywords.

This is the first step to SEO and it is important that you do your due diligence to make sure you have words that are relevant to your products and services so people can find you.

The Adwords tool will help you get started. Good key words are the first step.

Once you have decided on your key words, you need to be consistent.

Use SEO Plugin for WordPress

You could spend time trying to figure out key word density, come up with how many times you need to tag an image or use a subheading with your keyword for your WordPress site, or you could do what just about everyone else does… use a plug-in!

Remember, me talking about the value of plug-ins earlier?

There is a reason for that.

They are incredible tools.

You really can't put a price tag on some of them and WordPress has so many great SEO plug-ins.

However, my personal favorite is Yoast.

Once you install the Yoast SEO plug-in, you will see what I mean.

It literally walks you through SEO to get the best possible result from each post or page of content you release.

Following is a brief overview.

Any time you go to update content for a page or post, simply scroll down to the bottom of the dashboard screen and you will see what Yoast can do for you.

The section at the end will allow you to enter in your post keywords and meta-description.

Then, Yoast will generate a short synopsis of green or red numbers allowing you to see where you need to beef up certain portions of content.

However, if you click on the tab above the green words that says “Page Analysis”, you will get a quick check list of ways to beef up the SEO for that particular piece of content.

This gives you specifics down to image tags and subheading usage. It will also tell you if you have used the keyword too much or too little.

This is a phenomenal tool to have at your disposal.

It takes the guesswork out of search engine optimization, and gets your site ranked like a pro!

The only thing to keep in mind is that you want to make sure you spend time on the front end choosing your keywords carefully.

However, assuming you have chosen the best keywords to get your site ranked for those particular words, and you use them consistently with the help of a WordPress plug-in like Yoast, you will become a master at the basics of SEO.

You will also laugh at your friends who are spending thousands of dollars for unneeded SEO consulting.

Unless you are selling hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of product, you can probably handle most aspects of search engine optimization yourself.

So good luck, happy keyword hunting, and congratulations… you now possess a few secrets that will turn your WordPress site into a thriving online business!
